246 Fresh Aquaponic System

1

After passing through a bio-filter water full
of nutrients is circulated by a pump.

2

Plant food (nitrate) is made from the
conversion of solid fish waste by bacteria.

3

Clean water flows back into the system

4

Pumps powered by renewable energy
pump the water back into the fish tank.

Aquaponics is an agricultural system combining aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaculture being the act of farming fish, and hydroponics being the act of growing plants in a system without using soil. Aquaponics is a sustainable, natural way of producing healthy leafy greens and vegetables as well as fish. There are absolutely no chemicals involved and the plants survive solely on the nutrients from the fish water. Aquaponics involves a fish tank that is connected to biofilters and a growing bed. The entire system is gravity fed and powered by a water pump. The water from the fish tank flows through a bio-filter and into  the garden bed; this is where the plants take the nutrients out of the water, essentially cleaning the water. The fresh water then goes back into the fish tank. This system works because the fish and the plants coexist in a symbiotic ecosystem.

What are the benefits?

  1. Aquaponics uses only a fraction of the water used in conventional farming. Therefore does not have the same environmental impact of tremendous water consumption and waste.
  2. Aquaponic growing is 100% chemical free.
  3. Aquaponics energy usage is less than a conventional farm which use fuel and/or petrochemical-intensive fertilizers. All energy used is electrical, so alternate energy systems can be used to power an aquaponic farm.
  4. Aquaponics systems are self sustaining and offer year round farming regardless of the climatic conditions.
  5. In aquaponics there is no soil, weeds, soil pests or pathogens. Therefore your produce is less susceptible to disease.
  • Hydroponics is made up of a sterile man-made environment while aquaponics is a replication of a natural ecosystem, thus making it completely ‘organic’.
  • Hydroponic systems use nutrients made up of a mixture of chemicals and salts to feed plants, but in an aquaponic system, plant food is made from the conversion of solid fish waste by bacteria. This natural process results in better plant growth and lower disease rates.
  • Water in hydroponic systems needs to be discharged periodically, as the salts and chemicals build up in the water which becomes toxic to the plants. In aquaponics systems no water is discharged because there is no use of chemicals and the water is naturally filtered and recycled within the system.

Aquaponics can be traced back to the Aztec Indians who raised plants on rafts on the surface of a lake around 1000 AD, however, as a modern agricultural technology, it is still in its infancy. The idea of combining aquaculture and hydroponics has only been made possible as techniques for hydroponic farming and aquaculture have improved.
